Abstract

"This book explores the influence of justice principles in the field of health care law. By examining the role played by key stakeholders, it tracks the evolution of distributive norms for the allocation of healthcare resources in western welfare states. The issue of justice in the field of health care is becoming more central, with concerns over access, cost and provision. Recent reforms such as Obamacare in the United States and NHS Social and Care Act in the United Kingdom have seen increased pressure on governments to find just and equitable solutions to the problem of healthcare provision. This book addresses the fundamental question of what role justice should play in the allocation of services in the field and offers a more optimal model for their distribution"--

Abstract

An informed argument for reworking the broken market†'based U.S. healthcare system by making cost and quality more transparent   The United States has the most expensive healthcare system in the world. While policy makers have argued over who is at fault for this, the system has been quietly moving toward high†'deductible insurance plans that require patients to pay large amounts out of pocket before insurance kicks in. The idea behind this shift is that patients will become better consumers of healthcare when forced to pay for their medical expenses.   Laying bare the perils of the current situation, Peter A. Ubel-a physician and behavioral scientist-notes that even when patients have time to shop around, healthcare costs remain largely opaque, difficult to access, and hard to compare. Arguing for a middle path between a market†'based and a completely free system, Ubel envisions more transparent, smarter healthcare plans that tie the prices of treatments to the value they provide so that people can afford to receive the care they deserve.

Abstract

In this age of shortened office visits, doctors take care of their patients' immediate needs and often elide their own personal histories. But as reflected in 'Broke', Michael Stein takes the time to listen to the experiences of his patients whose financial challenges complicate every decision in life they make.

Abstract

A health care executive at Harvard explains how to become a savvy consumer and get the value we all deserve for our health care spending. This book navigates and demystifies the confusing world of health care shopping. Readers go on a guided tour inside American health care to learn why it is so messy, and who is invested in keeping it that way. The text offers a new vision of how health care could work if it were truly designed to meet consumer needs, creating a call to action on how to demand and help create such a system. A wake-up call to an industry tenuously holding on to the status quo and ripe for true disruption, this book outlines what consumers can do themselves and demand from doctors, hospitals, health plans, and policy makers to get more for their health care spending and, in so doing, reshape the health care system into one we all deserve. Using real and compelling consumer stories intertwined with expert analysis, this book illustrates why it is so difficult to act as an engaged health care consumer in the United States and pulls back the curtain to expose the forces that hold the system in place.

Abstract

Ineffective discharge management can jeopardize the successful completion of hospital treatment; but a well managed transition from hospital care to care at home depends on the efficient exchange of information with out-patient healthcare providers and professionals. This is just one way in which ICT can support healthcare and provide tools which help health professions to identify and communicate relevant data. Such tools will be increasingly important in future healthcare systems, and indeed a Europe-wide ICT infrastructure for information and data exchange may do much to revolutionize the quality of healthcare. It is therefore essential that infrastructures build on well-established standards such as Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), even if this initially takes longer to implement. This book presents the proceedings of the annual Health Informatics meets eHealth conference, held in Vienna, Austria, in May 2017. The special topic chosen for eHealth2017 is Digital Insight – Information-Driven Health & Care, and the conference addressed the increasingly international focus of eHealth and the importance of cross-border health ICT. The papers presented here cover many eHealth topics, from maternity records to rehabilitation and from staff training to information exchange.Future ICT systems will inevitably involve machine learning and predictive analytics in order to provide actionable information to health professionals and support preventive healthcare concepts, and this book provides an insight into current research in health informatics and eHealth, addressing many issues central to the future of health and care. The book will be of interest to all healthcare researchers and practitioners.

Abstract

This book introduces the classical and modern image reconstruction technologies. It covers topics in two-dimensional (2D) parallel-beam and fan-beam imaging, three-dimensional (3D) parallel ray, parallel plane, and cone-beam imaging. Both analytical and iterative methods are presented. The applications in X-ray CT, SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography), PET (positron emission tomography), and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) are discussed. Contemporary research results in exact region-of-interest (ROI) reconstruction with truncated projections, Katsevich's cone-beam filtered backprojection algorithm, and reconstruction with highly under-sampled data are included. The last chapter of the book is devoted to the techniques of using a fast analytical algorithm to reconstruct an image that is equivalent to an iterative reconstruction. These techniques are the author's most recent research results. This book is intended for students, engineers, and researchers who are interested in medical image reconstruction. Written in a non-mathematical way, this book provides an easy access to modern mathematical methods in medical imaging. Abstract

This book provides insights into the meaningful milestones of leaders and world experts in the field of movement disorders/neurology. Through the format of interview questions, it communicates the skills of key leaders in movement disorders. The interviewees are past and present leaders of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorders Society (IPMDS) and their experiences reflect the nature of working in the global environment and diversity of this society. The stories in this book have value that transcends a specific Society and will provide lessons in leadership that have application to many organizations around the world. This is a key resource for movement disorders experts, clinicians, scientists and young neurologists who are planning the next step in their career.
